The overall goal of this thesis was to examine the regulation of gene expression with respect to behavior in animal models of movement disorders. These studies examined the effects of pharmacological treatments producing different behavioral outcomes on gene expression in neurons of the basal ganglia. Further experiments examined the regulation of gene expression following lesions of the nigrostriatal pathway. Quantitative in situ hybridization histochemistry was used to measure the levels of mRNA encoding glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the rate-limiting enzyme in GABA synthesis, in pallidal neurons.
