The introduction of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) based fast packet switched transport for Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (BISDN) has made it possible to support a new range of high bandwidth variable bit rate services more efficiently. Of these new services, video based communications such as videotelephony, multimedia and interactive video and broadcast and entertainment video are expected to play a major role in the evolution of these networks. The goal of this work is to bring to light some properties of variable bit video which will be useful in designing networks and network protocols.
