The purpose of the study was to determine if empirically-derived dimensions would emerge from teacher and peer ratings of subtypes of childhood aggression. In addition, the relationship between these subtypes and peer status was examined. Drawing upon research on subtypes of childhood aggression and antisocial behavior, a 28-item rating scale was developed assessing proactive aggression (characterized by a planned, purposeful quality), reactive aggression (characterized by an overreactive, defensive quality), covert antisocial behavior (behavior not involving direct confrontation, characterized by a hidden, clandestine quality), and prosocial behavior.
