Sex and coexcistance : A qualitative study about how cultural background effects womens view on sex and how, when and where they speak about sex

This bachelor's thesis intends to gain understanding ​​about how young women in Sweden with different cultural backgrounds view sex and where, when and how they speak about sex. The empirical data is based on women's personal opinions and stories about their relationship to sex and coexistence. The data has been collected with a qualitative method. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted, of which half were implemented with women with a Swedish cultural background and half with women with a foreign cultural background. Three theoretical perspectives have been chosen in order to understand and analyze the empirical data. The theoretical frameworks that have been chosen are Beverly Skeggs (2000) theory about respectability, Yvonne Hirdmans (2004) theory about the gender system and lastly John H. Gagnon and William Simons (2005) theory about sexual scripts. The most used theoretical concepts are sexual scripts, cultural scenarios, post-paradigm society, paradigm society, gender structures and dichotomy. The results of this study show cultural belonging and background have a noticeable effect on how women construct their view on sex and how they speak about it. The first framing of question is How do young people reason about rights and obligations regarding sex and coexcistance? This studied results show that women with a swedish cultural backgrounds are aware that every person both possess rights and obligations when it comes to sex. The results also show that women with a foreign cultural background also have a clear view on that all people possess sexual rights, but that if a person possesses sexual obligations is based on the persons age, level of knowledge and what enviroment the person is surrounded by. The second issue is, How do young people reason about societal perceptions and myths regarding sex and coexcistance? The results show that the women with swedish cultural backgrounds feel well aware of different myths and norms about sex and coexistance. The women with foreign cultural backgrounds are less aware of myths but are well informed about societal perceptions regarding how women should behave sexually. The results show that cultural background plays a big role in whether something is perceived as a myth or truth. Lastly, the third framing of question is In what social situations do young women describe that conversations about sex and coexcistance take place? The results of this study show that the women with a swedish cultural background have a open mindset and way of speaking when it comes to sex an coexcistance, due to them being raised and now living in a liberal enviroment. The results also show that the women with a foreign cultural background have a more complicated relationship to speaking about sex, due to them having been raised in a more conservative and traditional enviroment.
