Philosophical discussion concerning animals' pain has focused exclusively on its moral feature. In this paper, we discuss a broader issue, namely, if animals can feel pain. To settle this matter, we will show why phenomenology seems to be the only philosophical perspective that can fully grasp pain experience. Phenomenology allowed the philosophical discovery of the lived-world, the philosophical exploration of conscience as a form of meaning, as well as the philosophical development of self as an affective and feeling structure.
