Healthcare providers who take care of young patients with cancer (leukaemia) in the context of a specialised hospital unit dedicated to the follow-up of adolescents and young adults show a great commitment toward supporting the developmental and individuation processes that are inherent to adolescence. Their constant attention to the patient-as-a-person makes them personally and emotionally involved, which leads to a redefinition of their professional roles and a shift in their professional identity.
