The relationship between the Spanish and the Muslim inhabitants of the Philippines and Borneo has always been difficult and depicted as one of enmity. This article, based on a series of published and unpublished sources, sheds light on a more peaceful facet of this relationship and demonstrates episodes of commerce between both sides from 1565 to 1800.
