This work is about about how we can heal from settler colonialism. Education is often thought of as the answer to social problems (as Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”). In the context of the US nation-state such liberatory claims are undermined by the weaponization of schooling for purposes of assimilation of peoples and elimination of cultures. Within their classrooms, in the halls of government, and in the streets, teacher activists are fighting against oppressive and violent schooling practices and for students, for democracy, and for the very future of all of us on Turtle Island.
