This paper investigates the aspects and interpretations of emotions, which might contribute to creating intelligent systems. Recent findings in different scientific disciplines suggest a new view of the relationship between cognitive processes and emotions. Emotions are no longer seen as mental qualities that limit rationality. It is now understood that emotions play a critical role in intelligent behavior and offer a great potential for designing artificial agents and more natural and expressive interactive technologies
