Jesuit economic networks at the time of their expulsion: the case of the Province and the Colegio Maximo of Santa Fe

Para la sustentación del vasto proyecto educativo y religioso de la Compañía de Jesús en América, se debió implementar una minuciosa red económica que involucraba a cientos de actores, diferentes formas de trabajo, y un amplio comercio y mercado, que se fundamentó a partir del sistema administrativo de hacienda-colegio. El objetivo central de esta investigación es analizar los componentes y elementos constitutivos de la red económica de la Compañía de Jesús en la Provincia y Colegio Máximo de Santa Fe al momento de la expulsión (1767). Para ello, se emplean diferentes tipos de fuentes primarias que se encuentran en múltiples repositorios tanto nacionales como extranjeros, para puntualizar los detalles (nodos) que componen dicha red y ver las formas de operabilidad económica que sostenía la Compañía en la Nueva Granada dieciochesca. Desde el punto de vista teórico, se plantea el uso de conceptos como red, nodo, empresa, comercio y relación, todos ellos enmarcados dentro de una temporalidad precapitalista. La investigación pone en evidencia que la empresa jesuita en Santa Fe fue más grande de que lo anteriormente había propuesto la historiografía, participando como institución crediticia en la ciudad y que planteaba estrategias y mecanismos que garantizaban menores desembolsos de metal, y también empleaban la especialización y subespecialización de sus bienes, logrando así ser una excelente muestra de una racionalidad económica precapitalista.To sustain the vast educational and religious project of the Society of Jesus in America, it was necessary to implement a meticulous economic network that involved hundreds of actors, different forms of work, and a wide trade-market, based on the system administration of the hacienda-Colegio. The main objective of this research is to analyze the components and constituent elements of the economic network of the Society of Jesus in the Province and Colegio Máximo de Santa Fe at the time of its expulsion (1767). To do this, it is proposed to use as a methodology different primary sources, mainly archive, housed in different national and foreign archives, in order to specify the details (nodes) that make up the network and see the forms of economic operability that supported the Society of Jesus in eighteenth-century New Granada. As a theoretical framework, the use of concepts such as network, node, company, commerce, and relationship are proposed, all of them framed within a precapitalist temporality. Throughout the investigation, it was found that the Jesuits in Santa Fe were larger than what historiography has shown before, presenting itself as a credit institution in the city and enjoying strategies and mechanisms that guaranteed lower metal disbursements, as well as employing the specialization and sub specialization of their assets thus achieving an excellent sample of a precapitalist economic rationality
