Computer-Based Geriatrics Workbooks for Resident Teaching

Abstract This resource has been developed as a self-learning tool for Emory University internal medicine residents on their geriatric medicine rotation. The resource was originally prepared as a companion to the website for Emory's Reynolds Program, which exists to strengthen physician training in geriatrics. The resource is composed of nine workbook modules, each centered on an important geriatrics topic. The topics include delirium, dementia, urinary incontinence, medication use, falls, pain management, hazards of hospitalization, failure to thrive, and transitions of care. The delirium module is augmented with a separate PowerPoint presentation on the topic, also included as part of this resource. Each module is divided into three parts. The module begins with a case vignette. Next comes a set of learning tasks related to the case; these tasks usually include a required reading that gives an outline of the topic and then go on to questions about the case. Finally, the resident must complete a posttest containing at least three boards-style multiple-choice questions that require integration of knowledge acquired in reading the module. Each module is intended to be finished in about 60 minutes. The workbook modules are presented here as both a Word document and a PDF for user convenience. Also included is a facilitator's guide containing answers to the tasks and posttests for each of the nine modules.
