Cette revue présente une synthèse des connaissances sur la bioluminescence des requins. A ce jour, les requins bioluminescents ne se trouvent que chez les Squaliformes, et plus précisément dans les familles Etmopteridae, Dalatiidae et Somniosidae. L'état de l'art des connaissances sur l'évolution, les fonctions écologiques, la structure histologique, la squamation associée et le contrôle physiologique des organes photogéniques de ces insaisissables requins des grands fonds est présenté. Une attention particulière est accordée à leur mécanisme unique et singulier de contrôle de la luminescence hormonale.
