Photographic Encounters in the Arctic Ice

Die Serie Svalbard (2014) der norwegischen Fotografin Mette Tronvoll (*1965) versammelt analoge Porträt- und Landschaftsaufnahmen aus Ny-Ålesund, einem internationalen Forschungsstandort auf Spitzbergen (norwegisch: Svalbard). Die von der Forschung bisher wenig beachtete Folge von zwanzig großformatigen Farbfotografien wird in diesem Beitrag methodisch in einer kunsthistorischen Einzelwerkanalyse untersucht. Hintergrundinformationen zur Entstehung der Serie werden einbezogen, um Tronvolls projektbasierte Strategie herauszuarbeiten. Die Frage nach dem Verhältnis zwischen dem Menschen und seiner natürlichen Umgebung, hier der Arktis, wird anhand von Porträts von Arktisforschern und Biologen sowie dem Motiv des Eisbergs erörtert.The series Svalbard (2014) by Norwegian photographer Mette Tronvoll (*1965) consists of analogue portrait and landscape photographs taken in Ny-Ålesund – an international research base on Spitsbergen (Norwegian: Svalbard). By means of art-historical, single-work analysis, this article examines the sequence of twenty large-format colour photographs, which has received little scholarly attention to date. Background information about the production of the series is included in the elaboration of Tronvoll’s project-based strategy. The relationship between human beings and their natural environment – here the Arctic – is explored in portraits of Arctic researchers and biologists, as well as through the motif of the iceberg
