The Effectiveness of Role Play in Teaching Speaking Skill to the Eighth Students of SMPN 3 Tangerang Selatan (A Quasi-experiment to the Eighth Students of SMPN 3 Tangerang Selatan Academic Year 2017/2018)

Most students have low proficiency in speaking English because the technique the teacher used tend to be monotonous and do not stimulus enough students to speak English. Role-play is considered as one of the technique that can be solution to this problem because it is considered to be interactive and fun. This study had quasi-experimental design which was intended to get empirical evidence of the effectiveness of using role-play technique on students? speaking skill. The population was the eight grade students of SMPN 3 Tangsel. The sample was 60 students chosen through convenience sampling. The writer did a pre-test to the sample and classified them based on their pre-test score; the class with lower raw score as experimental class, and the class with higher raw score as controlled class. The instrument was test. The test was administered at the beginning and at the end of treatment. The data from both pre- and post-test was analyzed using t-test analysis. The result of analyzing pre-test score showed that there was no significant difference between two classes. Then, the result of analyzing gained score, generated from the difference between pre- and post-test, revealed that the score of experimental class was significantly higher than controlled class at significance level 0,05. It means that the using of role-play technique was effective in improving speaking skill of the eightgrade students of SMPN 3 Tangse
