This is a contribution to a British Academy collection on Neo-Platonism and poetics, and my essay explores the degree to which Eugenio Montale's poetry can be said to follow in the footsteps of this tradition. It does so by considering the role of Irma Brandeis in his major poetry and her writings on Dante's Divine Comedy. The essay also considers how Montale employed these affinities as a resistance to his times, a poetic resistance which also influenced younger poets such as Vittorio Sereni
