Pareamento estímulo-estímulo com crianças com Transtorno do Espectro Autista: efeitos do intervalo entre tentativas

Stimulus-stimulus pairing (SSP) is a procedure that has been investigated for producing novel vocalizations in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The behavioral processes embedded are still poorly known and the effectiveness varies between studies. Children's characteristics and procedure variables are possible factors for this variation. In the present study were investigated (a) the effects of the intertrial interval (ITI) on the frequency of target responses, (b) the correlation between the frequency of responses and age and (c) between the frequency of responses and the behavioral repertoire. Eight children with ASD, between 2.2 and 7.3 years old, participated. Two target sounds were selected per participant from variations of existing vocalizations. Ten pairing sessions were conducted with target sounds that were presented with long or short ITIs since the last pairing and followed by the child's preferred stimuli. Seven out of eight children emitted target responses in at least one pairing session and three children in three or more sessions. There was no difference in the average rate of target responses between ITIs. No significant correlations were found between the frequency of responses and the age of the participants or with their behavioral repertoire. The lack of correlation between ITI and SSP efficiency replicates a previous study with humans, but contrasts with animal research using similar procedures. The lack of correlation between general and language skills of participants and the efficiency of the SSP also contrasts with a previous study.Keywords: respondent conditioning, vocalization, autism.O pareamento estímulo-estímulo (SSP) é um procedimento que vem sendo investigado por produzir vocalizações novas em crianças com Transtorno de Espectro Autista (TEA). Os processos comportamentais envolvidos ainda não são bem conhecidos e sua eficácia é variada entre estudos. Características das crianças e variáveis do procedimento são fatores possíveis para explicar essa variação. No presente estudo foram investigados (a) os efeitos do intervalo entre tentativas (ITI) de pareamento sobre a frequência de respostas-alvo, (b) a correlação entre a frequência de respostas e a idade e (c) entre a frequência de respostas e o repertório comportamental. Participaram 8 crianças com TEA, entre 2,2 e 7,3 anos. Dois sons-alvo foram selecionados por participante a partir de variações de vocalizações existentes. Foram conduzidas 10 sessões de pareamento com sons-alvo que eram apresentados com ITI longo ou curto desde o último pareamento e seguidos por estímulos preferidos da criança. Sete de oito crianças emitiram respostas-alvo em pelo menos uma sessão de pareamento e três crianças em três ou mais sessões. Não houve diferença na taxa média de respostas-alvo entre os ITIs. Não foram encontradas correlações significativas entre a frequência de respostas e a idade dos participantes ou com o repertório comportamental. A ausência de correlação entre o ITI e a eficiência do SSP replica um estudo anterior com humanos, mas contrasta com a pesquisa animal usando procedimentos análogos. A ausência de correlação entre as habilidades gerais e de linguagem dos participantes e a eficiência do SSP também contrasta com os resultados de um estudo anterior.Palavras-chave: pareamento, condicionamento respondente, vocalização, autismo
