Extreme events such as heat waves (HWs) or cold spells (CSs) can cause damage to human health, to productive activities such as agriculture and livestock, as well as causing various environmental impacts. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify the variability of the occurrence, duration and intensity mean of atmospheric HWS and CSs in the central part of the Santa Catarina coast from 1982 to 2017. For the detection of HWs and CSs in the atmosphere, the anomalies of the atmospheric temperature data were calculated in relation to the climatological normal, by calculating the 90th and 10th percentiles for HWs and CSs, respectively.
