THE REPRESENTATION OF INDONESIA IN THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD ONLINE NEWSPAPER IN TERMS OF HANDLING COVID-19 OUTBREAK: A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

Studi ini mengeksplorasi bagaimana Indonesia direpresentasikan dalam surat kabar online, The Sydney Morning Herald dalam menangani wabah virus corona. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif karena penelitian ini berfokus pada analisis atau interpretasi materi tertulis, yaitu surat kabar online. Data penelitian ini adalah dua artikel berita yang ditulis oleh James Massola yang dimuat di laman the Sydney Morning Herald, yang berjudul Joko Widodo 'did not want to stir panic' but Indonesia is now playing coronavirus catch-up and The world's next coronavirus hotspot is emerging next door menggunakan teori Analisis Wacana Kritis oleh Norman Fairclough. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah artikel berita SMH merepresentasikan Indonesia dalam representasi negatif dalam penanganan wabah virus corona dimana Indonesia dinilai kurang dalam melakukan tes corona, kurangnya transparansi kepada warganya, memiliki angka infeksi yang tinggi, dan respon pemerintah Indonesia dinilai datar. This study explores how Indonesia is represented in The Sydney Morning Herald online news in handling coronavirus outbreak. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method because this study focuses on the analysis or interpretation of written material, an online newspaper. The data for this study are two news articles written by James Massola that were published in the Sydney Morning Herald online newspaper, which entitled Joko Widodo 'did not want to stir panic' but Indonesia is now playing coronavirus catch-up, and The world's next coronavirus hotspot is emerging next door using the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough. The result of this study shows that SMH online news articles represent Indonesia in a negative representation in handling the coronavirus outbreak. Indonesia is seen as lack of coronavirus testing, lack of transparency to its citizen, having high infection rates, and Indonesian government response is seen as flat
