DEIXIS ANALYSIS ON ASHABUL KAHFI STORY IN THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF SURAH AL-KAHF BY ABDULLAH YUSUF ALI

This relation is related to the meaning and grammatical of language. In studying language, sometimes we can find words that have no specific meaning. This is happened because of the unstable reference. The example of this phenomenon is the use of pronouns such as this, that, these, those, or time terms like now, tomorrow, and yesterday, and some phrases that the reference is difficult to define. There are five elements in pragmatics namely presupposition, speech act, implicature, entailment, and deixis. Deixis is a word that refers to unstable objects, depending on the speaker, location, and the time of speech. In order to analyze deixis must be fully identified the contextual information. Based on Anderson and Keenan (1985), the division of the types of deixis is divided into three. Those are person deixis, place deixis, and time deixis. Sometimes, when someone reads Al-Qur’an, he/she often finds some words that confusing. For example pronouns, such as that, this, those, these, and other types of pronouns. In order to understand the utterance, readers have to recognize the situation that point to something specifically. Ashabul Kahfi is a story of youths that believed to Allah. Then, the unjust king asked them to worship idols. To avoid this persecution, they decided to refuge to the cave. There was the others of them; it is a dog that keep them in front of the cave. In this situation, then Allah showed His Mercy and Greatness by making them sleeping in a long time. The formulation of the research problem is the types of deixis found in surah Al-Kahf, especially on Ashabul Kahfi story. The objective of this study is to know the types of deixis on Ashabul Kahfi story in the English translation of Surah Al-Kahf published by Abdullah Yusuf Ali according Anderson and Keenan’s theory. Research method: 1.) this research was done using qualitative research approach, 2.) the sources of the data were Al-Quran surah Al-Kahfi and English translation of Surah Al-Kahf, especially on Ashabul Kahfi story, which starts from verse 9 until 26, 3.) this study used document analysis to collect the data. 4.) the instruments are divided into two. Firstly, main instrument that was the researcher herself. Secondly, the researcher used data sheet as secondary data. 5.) data analysis used in this research were data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion and verification. From the analysis, then the researcher found that 1.) there are three types of deixis according to Anderson and Keenan (1985) on Ashabul Kahfi story in the English translation of surah Al-Kahf. Those are person deixis, place deixis, and time deixis. Time deixis is the most type of deixis that found in this story used the form of time that is marked through tense (past tense) that showed an event happened in the past and the use of adverbials time. After that, person deixis on Ashabul Kahfi story showed by three types (first person, second person and third person) that include singular and plural pronouns. Besides, the least type that found is place deixis that indicates spatial region with a clearly defined boundary, directional verbs that show a movement and adverbs of place or place deictic word
