ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS PERFORMED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN GREEN BOOK MOVIE BY PETTER FARELLY

Keyword:Speech Act, Illocutionary Act, Context, Green Book Movie Communication is very important in the daily life. By communicating people can convey information or expressing something to the hearer, and the hearer can get the information. In communication a person has certain purpose. That purpose is carried through the utterance. In other words, every utterance spoken by the speaker contains meanings or purposes. The research problem of this research is “What types of illocutionary acts are found in the movie script of Green Book?” The objective of this research is to find out types of illocutionary acts performed by the main character in movie script of Green Book by Petter Farelly. The research used library research and the method of this research is descriptive design with qualitative research design. The technique of collecting data are (1) Downloading the movie script. (2) Watching the movie more than once to understand more the whole story. (3) Reading and observing the dialogue from the script. (4) Watching the movie while reading the script and take some notes to construct the analysis based on the data. (5) Collecting the data by watching the movie and trying to understand it deeply and looking for all utterances. (6) The researcher determined the art of dialogue that presented types of illocutionary act (Assertive, Directive, Commissive, Expressive, Declarative). (7) Collecting Don Shirley and Tony Lip utterances from the dialogue on the movie. (8) Identify it into categories of illocutionary act based on Searle’s categories. (9) Selecting every utterance in the movie into illocutionary acts. The researcher uses the content analysis in which the researcher tries to analyze data and to identify every utterance using illocutionary act in Green Book movie carried out by the main character. The result of this research showed that the main character, Tony Lip and Don Shirley use four types of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s theory, there are directive, expressive, representative and commissive. This research, reveals that Tony Lip and Don Shirley in their utterances use illocutionary act directive. This type is dominant and often used by the main characte
