THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ FREQUENCY ON WATCHING ENGLISH MOVIE AND THEIR TRANSLATION SKILL

Keywords: correlation, frequency on watching English movie, translation skill Translation becomes a vital role in learning foreign language, such as English. It is needed to connect between the source language and target language. There are ways to enrich translation skill. One of them is by watching English movie. Watching English movie is considered as stepping stone to enrich translation skill. Therefore, the researcher interested in finding the correlation between frequency on watching English movie and translation skill. The formulation of the research problem was “Is there any correlation between students’ frequency on watching English movie and their translation skill?” Then, this research is intended to investigate the correlation between students’ frequency on watching English movie and their translation skill. The researcher used correlational design with quantitative approach. The population was all 6th semester students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung in the academic year of 2017/2018 consisting 164 students. Meanwhile, the sample of this research was 31 students by using convenience sampling technique. The research instruments were through multiple choice tests. The data of this research was analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS 16.0. The result of this research shows that the mean score of students’ frequency on watching English movie is 31.19. This score means that the students often watch English movie. Meanwhile, the mean score of translation skill is 57.33. It means that the students got enough score. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient between the frequency on watching English movie and translation skill shows 0.345. It indicates that the correlation of both variables is low and positive correlation. However, the hypothesis testing shows that ρ-value is 0.057. The value is bigger than level of significance (α=0.05). This means that the null hypothesis is not rejected. Due to the hypothesis testing, it can be concluded that there is no significantcorrelation between frequency on watching English movie and translation skill
