Improving Students Writing Ability Through The Use Of Spelling And Grammar Checker in Microsoft Word 2007 At MAN 2 Tulungagung

Keywords: improving, writing ability, spelling and grammar checker. Technology increases rapidly. In this time, laptop becomes trend. Every student in senior high schools uses laptop to socialize with friend or improved knowledge and skills. There are many software in laptop when students writing something. They used word processor to write. Writing was easy for students but they have problem in grammar. Grammar was the first problem when they want to improve English. The research problems formulated for this study were: “How can spelling and grammar checker in Microsoft word 2007 improve students writing ability? And “How can spelling and grammar checker in Microsoft word 2007 improve students’ motivation in writing ability. The design of the study was classroom action research. The subjects of the study were XI Science 2. This study focused in using spelling and grammar checker to improve writing ability. In CAR, there are 4 steps: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. Planning used some people instruments’ were prepare before teaching and learning, implementing and observing was applying the method to get information, and reflecting was the result of applying the method. The findings show that after applied spelling and grammar checker in this study. Two criteria of success were achieved which based on writing score by used scoring rubric, observation sheet, and questionnaire. There were increased score writing test one that 46 % students past the test became 88% students past the test in writing test 3. The result of the observation sheet and questionnaire, there were 91 % students’ motivated using spelling and grammar checker and 80 % students that spelling and grammar checker helped them. The conclusion, based on the score writing test 3, observation sheet and questionnaire that spelling and grammar checker in Microsoft word 2007 was motivated students and effective in improving students writing ability especially grammar, spelling, and punctuation
