Correlation between students attitude and their achievement in English of second grade at MAN Trenggalek academic year 2013/2014

Keywords: correlation, attitude, English achievement In study there is a learning process. Process aimed to improving the personality of the road trying to gain new understandings, new values, and new skills. Success or failure of a person runs a learning process relating to acts. In this attitude is seen as one of the acts that affect the learning process. The attitude is related to learning because attitudes are internal factors that can affect learning. The problem of this study is: How is the students’ attitude in English of second grade students at MAN Trenggalek? How is the students’ English achievement of second grade students at MAN Trenggalek? Is there any correlation between students’ attitude and their English achievement in English? Furthermore, the formulations of the research objectives of this thesis are: 1) to determine students' attitudes towards learning English at MAN Trenggalek. 2) to determine the English achievement students in MAN Trenggalek. 3) to determine the correlation between students' attitudes and learning achievement of students towards English at MAN Trenggalek, This study uses correlation study design with quantitative approach. The population in this research is the second grade of students of MAN Trenggalek 2013/2014 totaled 300 students. The number of samples is 60 students determined using simple random sampling system. Both variables were examined in this study is the independent variable (attitudes and learning outcomes). Methods of data collection use questionnaire and English test results. Techniques of analysis of this study by calculating the correlation coefficient through SPSS 16 for Window. The results of this study showed an average questionnaire students value is 73.8 and average of student English test is 50.05. Based on the analysis of data through calculation by SPSS 16.0 for Windows-using Spearman correlation analysis, the data indicate that the Sig table r = 0.259> count r = 0.019. This means t count smaller than t table at the level of 5% and 1%. The coefficient value in this study was very low, but the numbers indicate a positive value then the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
