Resiliência da Agricultura de Pequena Escala no Espaço Rural Metropolitano do Rio de Janeiro

This article discusses how different degrees of rural-urban interaction in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro give rise to multifunctional diversity, farming resilience, and rural innovation. In some rural areas, specialized agriculture supplies products to the metropolitan area so taking advantage of accessible markets in a classic way. At the same time, agricultural and non-agricultural activities are combined in creative ways in other areas, which defy the linear logic of rural change. The complexity of farming systems in this urban-industrial region contributes to better understanding the rural hinterland, going beyond the view that it is an inert space only subject to external interferences and actions. To achieve this, the research examined the pressures facing farmers in areas affected by urban and industrial dynamics of Rio de Janeiro, how these pressures have influenced farming systems, how farmers have developed individual and collective resilience, and the wider theoretical and policy lessons gained from how rural areas and farming communities respond to urbanisation. The study argues that rural space should also be seen to possess its own dynamics and resilience that contribute to complex outcomes in which the leadership of social actors creates forms of spatial ordering through which they adapt to scenarios of regional change.O artigo propõe discutir como diferentes graus de interação rural-urbana no conjunto regional metropolitano do Rio de Janeiro resultam em diversidade multifuncional, resiliência da agricultura e inovação rural. Em algumas áreas rurais, a agricultura especializada fornece produtos agrícolas para a área metropolitana, aproveitando os benefícios de mercados próximos de uma forma clássica. Em outras áreas, atividades agrícolas e não agrícolas são combinadas, desafiando a lógica linear da mudança rural. A complexidade da agricultura nesse contexto urbano-industrial contribui para a compreensão do espaço rural na interface rural-urbana, contrapondo a visão de espaço inerte e sujeito a interferências e ações externas. A pesquisa examina as pressões enfrentadas pelos agricultores em áreas afetadas pela dinâmica urbano-industrial do contexto metropolitano do Rio de Janeiro, como essas pressões influenciam os sistemas agrícolas, como os agricultores desenvolvem capacidades de resiliência individual e coletiva e as lições teóricas e políticas mais amplas obtidas sobre como o espaço rural multifuncional e produtores rurais respondem à urbanização. Argumenta-se que o espaço rural pode ser visto através da sua dinâmica e resiliência que contribuem em configurações espaciais complexas na interação rural-urbana, onde as ações dos atores sociais criam formas de ordenamento espacial adaptadas ao cenário da mudança regional
