Le comportement spontané de l'animal est donc modulé par les informations sensorielles qu'il extrait de son environnement, mais présente une variabilité intrinsèque, à la fois entre individus et au sein d'un même individu. La régulation de l'état interne qui définit à chaque instant le comportement observé, et comment celui-ci peut être modulé par les conditions environnementales, reste mal comprise.
