Project 45: Food Deserts & Suspension and Expulsion

Food deserts refer to areas that lacked access to healthy and affordable foods. Low-income communities may have access to food, but the food may be unhealthy and/or overpriced. Racial and ethnic minorities are overrepresented in stats on food deserts reported by the USDA. Research found that fast foods, which were unhealthy, were heavily promoted in African American communities. Convenience stores with unhealthy foods were common in these communities, too. However, there are possible solutions to this issue
