Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Diseases (NAFLD) is a major public health concern with global prevalence of 25%. NAFLD is increasingly recognized as the most common chronic liver disease. The spectrum of the hepatic diseases ranges from steatosis (fatty liver) to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) (steatosis, inflammation, liver injury) and subsequently to the activation of fibrogenic pathways, which correlates with a high risk of developing cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The treatment of NASH is still limited because of the lack of effective pharmacological treatment as well as lack of effective and practical diagnostic tools.
