The synthesis of a recyclable palladium-ionic liquid catalyst encapsulated in Halloysite nano-scrolls has successfully been developed. The nanocomposite (Pd-IL@Hal) was prepared in an aqueous environment in which Pd(OAc)2 was reduced by ascorbic acid and capped with an ionic liquid grafted Halloysite. The Pd-IL@Hal catalyst was used in Mizoroki-Heck coupling reactions with the alkene, acrylic acid, and various aryl halides (in the presence of a base) to afford the resulting substituted cinnamic acid products. The catalyst was found to be efficient giving high yields under mild conditions. Pd-IL@Hal was easily recycled by filtration and washing with just the use of water.
