Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria and can utilize two different pathways after infection; the lytic or lysogenic cycles. During the lytic cycle, the bacteriophage hijacks the bacterial machinery to replicate itself and destroy the bacterial cell. During the lysogenic cycle, the viral genome integrates into the bacterial genome, and the bacterium reproduces normally. The lysogenic cycle continues until a stimulus causes the virus to reenter the lytic replication cycle. Temperate bacteriophages use both the lytic and lysogenic cycles.
