Despite the passage of United Nations’ Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 in 2000, a landmark resolution formally acknowledging the gendered nature of war and peace, women’s inclusion in official peacemaking processes is rare and LGBTI presence remains largely nonexistent. A notable exception is the 2010-2016 peace negotiations between the Colombia government and the FARC-EP. Here warring parties appointed female negotiators and established an unprecedented bi-partisan Gender Sub-commission, which implemented a robust gender perspective containing 122 clauses addressing matters pertaining to women and LGBTI persons into its 300+ page peace agreement.
