Leptin role as a factor in the overweight in children with diabetes mellitus

Material and methods: It was design a case and control study in 30 children with diabetes mellitus: 15 cases with overweight-obesity and 15 controls with a normal BM. The sample was paired by sex: 20 females and 10 moles. In di of them a sample of blood was obtained in order so study the plasmatic concentration of leptin. Results: In the girls (n = 20) the leptin concentration was 25.0 ± 11.0 nemt while in the children (n = 10) it was of 8.5 ± 5.9; the difference was significant with the r test (p < 0.005), assuming that the variances were equal (p < 0.023). Differences in leptin were also significant among the 10 women with diabetes, but without overweight-obesity and a normal BMI. Conclusions: The leptin concentration was higher among the women and it was higher in those with overweight-obesity.Objetivo: Conocer si la leptina esta asociada con el sobrepeso de niños con diabetes mellitus, Material y métodos: Se diseño un estudio de casos y controles en 30 niños con diabetes mellitus: los casos (n = 15) con sobrepeso- obesidad y los controles (n = 15) con IMC normal: la muestra fue apareada par sexo. En ellos se obtuvo una muestra de sangre y se estudi6 Ia concentration plasmitica de leptina. Resultados: En las ninas (n = 20) la concentration de leptina fue 25.0 ± 11.0 ng/mL mientras en los (linos (n = 10) fue de 8.5 5.9; Ia diferencia fue significativa con Ia prueba de t (p < 0.005): asumiendo que las variables fuesen iguales (p < 0.023). También las diferencias fueron significativas en la leptina, entre las ICI mujeres con diabetes pero sin sobrepeso-obesidad y las que tenían un IMC normal. Conclusiones: La concentración de leptina fue mayor en las mujeres y en estas fue mis alta en los que tenían sobrepeso-obesidad.Universidad de Costa Rica.
