Strengths and limitations in methods used in the teaching and learning of english in public schools: a study of cases

El siguiente artículo presenta los resultados obtenidos de una investigación realizada con docentes de inglés en escuelas públicas de la Dirección Regional de Educación de San Ramón, Alajuela, Costa Rica, específicamente once docentes de las Direcciones D1 y D5. La investigación se apoya en un estudio de casos, sustentado en el paradigma cualitativo. El objetivo fundamental fue determinar las fortalezas y limitaciones en relación con el conocimiento de la teoría de los métodos utilizados para el aprendizaje y enseñanza del inglés. El estudio emplea herramientas etnográficas, tales como el cuestionario y la observación no participante. El análisis e interpretación de los datos se realizó, a partir de las fortalezas y limitaciones encontradas. Con base en los resultados obtenidos, se determinó como fortalezas que los docentes participantes utilizan una variedad de actividades durante el desarrollo de las lecciones, muestran interés por utilizar métodos para la enseñanza y aprendizaje del inglés e intentan incorporar, por lo menos, un método durante los procesos de mediación pedagógica que realizan. Como limitantes se evidencian deficiencias en el dominio de la teoría de los métodos empleados. para la enseñanza del inglés, mezcla de actividades que involucran varios métodos y el desconocimiento del método específico utilizado, por ellos en sus lecciones.The following article presents the results obtained from an investigation carried out with teachers of English in public schools from Dirección Regional de Educación, San Ramón, Alajuela, specifically eleven teachers from schools D1 and D5. The investigation is based on a study of cases, supported by the qualitative paradigm. The main objective was to determine, the strengths and limitations in relation to the knowledge of theories and use of methods for the learning and teaching of English. The study uses ethnographic tools such as a questionnaire, and non participant observation. The analysis and interpretation of the data was done according to the strengths and limitations found. Based on the results gotten, it is determined as strengths, the participant teachers use a variety of activities within their lessons, show interest to apply methods for the learning and teaching of English and try to incorporate at least, a method in the mediation process developed. It is shown, as limitations, lack of domain in the theories and methods used in the teaching of English, mingle of activities that involve several methods and lack of knowledge about the method used by them in their classes
