Durante mucho tiempo, la mayoría de los críticos han ignorado la puntuación en los textos literarios. Sin embargo, la puntuación constituye una parte esencial del proceso creativo. La manera en que cada escritor emplea los signos de puntuación dice tanto de su sensibilidad creativa como de su uso de metáforas, metonimia y de cualquier otro "trope". En este artículo se intenta revisar cómo se empleó, en las primeras novelas británicas, el "trope of punctuation" y se pretende demostrar, además, que muchas de las reglas que hoy guían a los estudiantes de composición eran desconocidas durante el Renacimiento y los siglos XVII, XVIII y XIX.
