Productive and nutritional phenology of corn for the yield of fodder.

El experimento se llevó a cabo en la Estación Experimental “Alfredo Volio Mata” de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Se empleó semilla de maíz criolla forrajera. Alos 37 días de edad se realizó el primer muestreo de plantas y los siguientes se efectuaron cada 14 días hasta los 149 días de edad. Se determinó el contenido de materia seca, la proteína cruda, las cenizas totales, la fibra neutro detergente (FND), la fibra ácido detergente (FAD) y la lignina así como los valores de hemicelulosa y celulosa. Antes de los 65 días de crecimiento, la producción de hojas fue superior a la de tallo. Posterior a esta edad, la planta fue mayor productora de tallo. Las flores emergieron después de los 100 días y ellas tuvieron un alto contenido de materia seca, contribuyendo poco en el rendimiento global del cultivo. Alos 120 días, la producción de materia seca en las mazorcas fue ligeramente mayor a la acumulada por las hojas. El contenido de materia seca en el tallo, antes de los 120 días, y en la hoja antes de los 80 días fue bajo, para ser empleado como forraje en la alimentación del ganado. El contenido de proteína cruda comenzó a decrecer drásticamente a los 65 días en el tallo y a los 90 días en la hoja. Sólo en los primeros 50 días de crecimiento, la pared celular de los tallos fue menor a 50%. El contenido de cenizas fue mayor en el tallo que en la hoja en los primeros 90 días. Por las cualidades fenológicas observadas y la concentración de nutrientes en tallos y hojas, se recomienda la cosecha y el aprovechamiento del forraje de maíz entre 80 y 90 días de crecimiento. En edades posteriores, se puede obtener el beneficio de un mayor tonelaje por unidad de superficie, sacrificando la calidad nutricional.The purpose of this study was to determine the yield of biomass of corn in different stages of growth, cultivated in the higlands of Costa Rica as fodder for dairy cattle. It was carried out at the Alfredo Volio Mata Experimental Station of the University of Costa Rica. The first sampling was carried out after 37 days and every two weeks threafter through 149 days. Dry matter, crude protein, ashes, neutro detergent fiber (NDF), acld detergent fiber (ADF) and the lignin were analyzed. The value of hemicellulose and cellulose were calculate. The yield of green and dry biomass in the stems, leaves, flowers and fruit of the plant was measured at different stages of growth. Before 65 days, the yield of dry mateiral in the leaves was superior to that in the stems. Later the accumulation of dry matter in the stems was around three times greater then that in the leaves. The first blossoming occurred after three months. Two weeks later the first ears of corn were collected, thir highest yield occuring at four months. After 65 days, the relation leaves:stems was less than 1, predominating the accumulation of stems. This relationship slowly decresed as the plants became older. The concentration of dry matter in the stems was less than in the leaves at all growth stages. The content of crude protein (CP) in the stem was higher (18%) during the first 50 days, decresing to 11% at 80 days and threafter remined between 6.5% and 7.5%
