Preparation and surface chemistry characteristics of pure and coated acicular alpha-FeOOH have been studied. Acicular alpha-FeOOH particles with narrow size distribution were prepared by a 'precipitation-oxidation' process. The electrokinetic behavior of alpha-FeOOH particles and the specific adsorption of Al(III) ions on alpha-FeOOH surface were examined. The alpha-FeOOH particles coated with uniform layers of aluminum hydrous oxide were obtained by dilution hydrolysis of complexed aluminum ions at 25 degrees C.
