Comportement social et comportement culturel des élites rurales calabro-grecques d'après les actes de la pratique (XIe -XIIIe siècles)

International audienceThanks to the Greek notarial deeds written in Calabria during the Byzantine, Norman and Swabian periods, one can observe the Italian-Greek rural élites reacting to the importation, by the Normans, of western social, economical and cultural realities in a juridical and cultural landscape that remains largely Byzantine until the mid-13 t h century. The most important difficulty of this study relies on the unclear distinction between the rural notables from the urban élites and from the more humble people. The personal status are not appropriate, and the criteria of economical level is not sufficient, especially because rural élites follow the Byzantine model of social hierarchy. Rural élites are recognized for acting as go-between for connecting the administration and the rural communities, a function by which they represent the common memory for the land and the people. The study enables to shed light on a cultural attitude peculiar to these rural élites, appearing as important conservatism and impermeability to the acculturation, mostly opportunistic, chosen by the urban élites.Les actes notariés grecs rédigés dans la Calabre aux époques byzantine, normande et souabe permettent d'observer les élites rurales italo-grecques face à l'importation, par les Normands, de réalités socio-économiques et culturelles occidentales dans un paysage juridique et culturel largement byzantin jusqu'au milieu du XIII e siècle. La difficulté majeure de l'étude tient au fait qu'il n'est pas aisé de distinguer ces notables ruraux des élites urbaines et des populations plus modestes : les statuts personnels sont inadéquats et le critère économique ne suffit pas, notamment parce que les élites rurales se reconnaissent dans un modèle byzantin, fonctionnel, de la hiérarchie sociale : elles se distinguent par l'exercice de fonctions de médiation entre l'administration et la population dans lesquelles elles représentent la mémoire collective des terres et des hommes. L'étude permet de mettre en lumière le comportement culturel propre à ces élites rurales, qui se manifeste par un conservatisme et une imperméabilité importants à l'égard de l'acculturation, largement opportuniste, qu'ont choisie les élites urbaines
