This paper is a summary of work carried out during the past five years as part of an ONR/NAVAIR Research Initiative. The effort has been devoted to developments and applications of an approximate analysis intended to provide understanding of observed behavior and guidelines for design and development. Although most of the work has been carried out for longitudinal modes, quite extensive results have been obtained for transverse modes in a circular chamber, for both second and third order nonlinear gasdynamics. Especially important are the useful conclusions based on the simplified two-mode approximation.
