The impact of psychological intervention on HIV disease: A psychoneuroimmunological perspective

This thesis examines, from a psychoneuroimmunological perspective, the potential for psychological interventions to impact the progression of HIV disease. The purpose is to further the understanding of the role played by psychological factors in immune system function, and the progression of HIV disease, and to evaluate the potential for psychological interventions to be a useful consideration in treatment. The relevant published literature pertaining to the interactions among psychological conditions, psychological interventions, immune function, and HIV progression is reviewed. It was concluded that psychological factors play a significant role in the progression of HIV disease, and, though the findings are preliminary, that there is potential for psychological intervention to play an important role in the treatment of HIV disease. i
