In this editorial the author posits libraries exist to uphold the principles of intellectual freedom. The Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse reported 79 challenges to materials from July 1, 1992 to June 30, 1993. Books were challenged based on homosexual content, vulgarity, content deemed too frightening for children, and material perceived to be satanic or related to the occult. Of the 79 challenges, 70 items were retained in library collections. In two cases librarians reclassified items, in four cases use of items was restricted, and in two cases items were removed from libraries. One magazine was replaced with another
