For my thesis, I explore and formulate the image constructed around the Madres de la Plaza de mayo for English-speaking readers by performance theory and feminist scholarship, and how documentary footage and scripted film correlates or opposes that image. I examine how these constructed and recorded images of the Madres and their positioning produces a mythical notion of who the Madres are and how they and their marches became destabilizes of the traditional concepts of maternity, femininity and passivity in the Dirty War. This thesis is meant to be a description and analysis of the mythical image of the Madres for English-speaking audiences.
