An Evolution of the Latin Alphabet: Harvesting the Typographic Imagination of Italy

In the history of Graphic Design, the countries that are most renowned for their influence on typography are France, Germany, and Switzerland. However, only Italy possesses the major steps in the evolution of Latin alphabet, which is the most widely used alphabet in the world. This proposal outlines my traveling to archives in Italy to study and photograph typographic specimens from 1000 CE through 1960. The resultant project will be a timeline of photographs documenting 2000 years the evolution of the Latin alphabet in Italy, a series of collages, and an exhibition at the Italian Consulate in Boston and the Italian-American Cultural Center in Worcester. Furthering the educational value of this project will be a lecture at RISD and an expansion of my course material at BSU. My creative work and teaching is focused on typography. This project will deepen my knowledge on typography and widen my professional network for its future development
