Ronald E. McNair was selected as an astronaut candidate by National Aeronautic Space Administration (NASA) in January 1978. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from North Carolina A&T State University in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976. Following graduation, he became a staff physicist with Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, CA. He first flew as a mission specialist on STS 41-B which launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on Feb. 3, 1984.
