The cognitive construct of working memory (WM) is complex and reflects multiple factors. Measuring WM involves employing a range of tasks that are assumed to demand storage and processing, then applying the individual differences found in WM to understand the role WM plays in a broad range of cognitive tasks. Approaches to the assessment of WM have evolved employing empirical and theoretical measures. However, underlying these tasks are essential language sub-processes which are often overlooked.
