The COVID-19 pandemic represents an unprecedented challenge for global public health governance that has jeopardized theoretical assumptions and upset dichotomies and hierarchies such as global/local, global North/global South, and top-down policies/ grassroot interventions, which structure the field of global health. The first part of this article problematizes global health policies for COVID-19. Such policies are not feasible in many countries in the Global South and can exacerbate existing racial, gender, and economic inequalities.
