Despite the diversity of anti-epileptic drugs available to reduce neuronal excitability, nearly one-third of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) remain resistant to treatment. Accumulating evidence supports a role for neuroinflammation as a primary driver of epileptogenesis occurring after brain insults, as a self-perpetuating factor of epileptic seizure activity, but also as a major contributor to epilepsy co-morbidities such as cognitive dysfunctions and mental-health conditions.
