We characterize antibody “evolvability” by combining high-throughput techniques from molecular biology and tools from statistical physics and data science, an interdisciplinary approach already successfully applied in other biological contexts. Evolvability describes the ability of antibodies to evolve, i.e. the effect of mutation and selection on their phenotype. It is an essential property for the success of affinity maturation, an accelerated evolutionary process leading to antibodies with improved binding affinity to a given pathogen.
