Neurovascular coupling (NVC), the tight coupling between neuronal activity and cerebral blood flow, is essential for brain function and integrity. Among the cellular actors of NVC, pyramidal neurons expressing cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) are responsible for about half of the dilatory neurovascular response through the release of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). We sought to determine the activity regimes of these neurons that trigger vasodilatory or vasoconstrictor neurovascular responses and to clarify their mechanisms.
