Traumatic memories of the civil-military dictatorships in Brazil and Argentina told by the portraits of the dead and missing ones

This doctoral research studied the attributed uses of the portraits of the dead and missing people in the civil-military dictatorships in Brazil (1964-1985) and Argentina (1976 – 1983). The political violence perpetuated by the State imposed to the society a traumatic atmosphere of terror and victimized, directly or indirectly, hundreds of thousands of people, being many of them dead of missing. The traumatic memories that have remained from that time are situated between what should be remembered and forgotten and the fight for atonement. This research departed from the context mentioned before and followed the routes of the political transition and redemocratization processes of each of these countries. Therefore, it is important to highlight the role of the social actors as protagonists and active individuals who claim for the memory, the truth and the justice regarding the traumatic memories derived from the authoritarian and repressive regimes of the military dictatorships in these countries. These individuals have used portraits as means of testimony, denouncement and fight for the memory of that past. It was important to try to understand how these portraits, which were incorporated in the public scene as powerful devices for creating awareness and promoting transformation, have influenced the consolidation of the memory policies in each of these countries. This comparative study analysed the uses attributed to the portraits. The method showed efficiency in comparing two similar cases in their original contexts and the uses given to the portraits, identifying the following sources: a) portraits exhibited in Memory Institutions derived from the memory policies; and b) portraits depicted in placards and carried in social manifestations organized by the social actors along with the society. In both cases, these actions aimed at giving visibility to the memory of the dictatorships and what they represented, and were a way to honour the victims. The intense and continuous use of the portraits of the dead and missing, the way they were presented, the emotional power aggregated to them, and the visibility they received may have contributed to a greater awareness regarding the traumatic memory and the violations of the human rights, which resulted in more solidarity in a country compared to the other. Such visibility and support were fundamental to the elaboration and implementation of memory policies, and the portraits were used as powerful tools to claim for atonement, recognition and memory.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESA pesquisa doutoral apresentada nesta tese teve como objeto de estudo os usos atribuídos aos retratos de mortos e desaparecidos das ditaduras civis-militares ocorridas no Brasil (1964–1985) e na Argentina (1976–1983). A violência política proveniente do Estado teve como saldo traumático um clima generalizado de terror na sociedade daquela época e vitimou, de forma direta e indireta, centenas de milhares de pessoas, entre as quais muitas estão mortas ou desaparecidas. Restaram as memórias traumáticas de um passado recente que se apresenta entre a dicotomia do lembrar e do esquecer e a luta por reparação. O campo de observação da pesquisa teve como ponto de partida o contexto mencionado e os processos de transição política e redemocratização de cada país. Nesse sentido, é importante destacar o papel dos atores sociais como protagonistas e sujeitos ativos nos processos reivindicatórios de memória, verdade e justiça dos contextos relativos às memórias traumáticas provenientes do período autoritário e repressivo das ditaduras civis-militares nesses países. Observou-se que esses sujeitos utilizam retratos como instrumento de testemunho, denúncia e luta pela memória daquele passado. Buscou-se conhecer em que medida esses retratos, os quais foram incorporados na cena pública como potentes dispositivos de sensibilização e transformação de sentidos, impactaram na consolidação das políticas de memória de cada um dos países. A metodologia empregada no trabalho foi o estudo comparativo oportunizado pela pesquisa de campo aplicada na análise dos usos atribuídos aos retratos. Tal método demostrou-se útil ao comparar dois casos similares em seus contextos de origem e nos usos dados aos retratos inseridos nesse campo de observação e indicou as seguintes fontes: a) retratos expostos nas Instituições de Memória provenientes das políticas de memória; e b) retratos empunhados ou carregados nas Manifestações Sociais organizadas a partir dos atores sociais em conjunto com a sociedade. Em ambos os casos essas ações tiveram o propósito de dar visibilidade à memória da ditadura e ao que ela representou, além de homenagear as vítimas. O uso intensificado e continuado dos retratos de mortos e desaparecidos, o modo como eles são apresentados, a carga de emoção agregada e a visibilidade dada aos usos podem ter contribuído para uma maior sensibilização à causa relativa às memórias traumáticas e às violações de direitos humanos e, portanto, maior solidarização da sociedade de um país em comparação à de outro. Essa visibilidade e esse apoio foram fundamentais para a formulação e implementação de políticas de memória e os retratos foram utilizados como potentes instrumentos reivindicatórios de reparação, reconhecimento e não esquecimento
