Memories and historical discourses: the patrimonialization of Serra da Barriga (1986-2017)

This research deals with the patrimonialization of Serra da Barriga, in União dos Palmares, state of Alagoas, which in the past hosted the largest slave settlement of America, known as Quilombo dos Palmares. In this way, it became a symbolic-cultural sacred ground that represents the struggle of these people who were enslaved. From the mobilizations of Black Movement in the 1970s and with the Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil (1988), Serra da Barriga was declared a National Monument. In november 2017, Black Consciousness month, it was added to the list of Mercosur Cultural Heritage. This recognition was presented as an important advance in contributing to the strengthening of Brazilian Cultural diversity. This change in status from national to regional heritage seeks to investigate how the historical uses and discourses around Serra da Barriga validate it as a heritage, considering that the space involves different actores, therefore, different memories and (re)appropriations of this historical past. Thus, this investigation is based on the collection and construction of oral sources, under the management of Oral History, which makes it possible to analyze the different narratives about Serra da Barriga, together with the observations of field research activity, which made it possible to understand the existence of a plurality of memories that support Serra da Barriga as heritage, fundamental issues because not all voices are found in official documents.Esta pesquisa trata do processo de patrimonialização da Serra da Barriga, em União dos Palmares no estado de Alagoas, que no passado sediou o maior assentamento de escravizados das Américas, conhecido como Quilombo dos Palmares. Dessa forma, tornou-se um solo sagrado simbólico-cultural que representa a luta destes povos que foram escravizados. A partir das mobilizações do Movimento Negro na década de 1970 e com a Constituição Federal de 1988, a Serra da Barriga foi declarada Monumento Nacional. Já em novembro de 2017, mês da Consciência Negra, foi adicionada à lista de Patrimônio Cultural do Mercosul. Este reconhecimento apresentou-se como importante avanço na contribuição do fortalecimento da diversidade cultural brasileira. No entanto, dessa mudança de status de patrimônio nacional para regional, busca-se investigar como os usos e discursos históricos em torno da Serra da Barriga a validam enquanto bem patrimonial, considerando que o espaço envolve diferentes atores, logo, diferentes memórias e (re)apropriações deste passado histórico. A investigação se fundamenta a partir da coleta e construção de fontes orais, sob o manejo da História Oral, que possibilita analisar as distintas narrativas sobre a Serra da Barriga, juntamente ás observações da atividade de campo, que tornou possível compreender a existência de uma pluralidade de memórias que sustentam a Serra da Barriga como patrimônio, questões fundamentais, pois nem todas as vozes se encontram nos documentos oficiais
