Date of planting as a factor in the growth, development, and yield of snap beans

Graduation date: 1964In previous years, at Corvallis, yields of bush snap beans\ud varied among planting dates. In order to obtain additional information\ud on the effect of planting dates on the growth, development and\ud yield of snap beans, four field plantings and two greenhouse plantings\ud of the variety O.S.U. 2051 were made.\ud Results indicated that the late-June and early-July plantings\ud gave higher yields than the mid-May and early-June plantings. In\ud the greenhouse, the April planting had a higher yield than the\ud February planting. The number of flowers per plant increased as\ud the date of planting was delayed. The number of pods per plant was\ud the maximum in the early-July planting. High temperatures during\ud the major part of the flowering period reduced the number of pods\ud per plant.\ud The fresh weights and dry weights of the plants were highest\ud when the planting date was delayed. The number of nodes and height\ud of the plants increased in the first three field plantings but were\ud decreased in the last planting.\ud The data on the heat unit requirements of the different plantings\ud did not show any close relationship.
